The path, the path, the path, we cannot stress this enough when it comes to finding the right path forward for ideas benefiting Hawaiʻi residents. So how did Hawaiʻi’s energy costs become the most expensive in the nation, triple the national average?
In 2008, the Lingle/Aiona administration created the Hawai’i Clean Energy Initiative, pushing us on the path toward more energy options to drive costs down, while getting us away from fossil fuels. At the same time, it did not limit Hawai’i’s energy options.
We uncovered that the Kalaeloa coal plant was shut down without any renewable energy available to offset the high energy bill Hawai’i’s residents already pay. This left Hawai’i with only one option - burning more oil at a higher cost.
This is why we say that the path to renewable energy is just as important as the goal. Otherwise, talk of renewable energy becomes a political prop piece. And in the end, Hawaiʻi residents pay the price for it.
